These two officers were posted in Maharashtra Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) when Mehtar was in the custody of the Mumbai Crime Branch and handed over to the Gujarat police.
A top agency officer said the request for prosecution awaits the signature of CBI Director Ranjit Sinha before it is sent to the home ministry, the cadre controlling authority of IB, next week.
The ministry feels that IB officers were wrongly named in the CBI chargesheet, but the agency stands by its probe and asserts that "the evidence cannot be ignored".
CBI officers said two former IB officials of Maharashtra Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau and Mumbai Police will be part of supplementary chargesheet in the Sadiq fake encounter case. CBI had found during investigation that Jamal, who was killed on November 13, 2003 near Galaxy Cinema in Naroda in Ahmedabad, was allegedly targeted by Gujarat Police on the basis of trumped up inputs and profile generated by the then SIB assistant director.
In its first chargesheet, the agency had accused eight Gujarat policemen, including two retired officers, of criminal conspiracy and murder in the encounter case.
